This lesson was recently updated on

June 2025

This is a required assessment for the Science & Cooking for Educators Program.

Summary of Updates

New Activities:
● Nutrition facts label interactive (Lesson 1.1)
● Atomic theory + subatomic particles activities (Lessons 1.2, 1.3)
● "What is an ion?" walkthrough interactive (Lesson 1.4)
● Peer-reviewed study evaluation (Lesson 1.6)

Modifications:
● Focused sports drink lab for clearer takeaways
● Copper chloride electrolysis now whole-class demo
● Updated assessment
● Removed ionic compounds (moved to Salts & Umami lesson)

Large Scale Changes:
● Removed ionic compounds from this lesson (now explored in Umami)

New Activities:
● Lesson 1.1: Added new interactive to compare nutrition facts labels of drinks (Lesson 1.1)
● Lessons 1.2 and 1.3 are entirely new- Added Atomic Theory (Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr) and activities on subatomic particles and atomic structure
● Lesson 1.4: Heavily updated; Added 3 new interactives 1) Atom vs. Ion Interactive (compare and look for patterns in ion and atom forms of different elements) 2) "What is an ion?" practice interactive (identifying charge of ions) 3) Ionization Energy Interactive (to understand that valence electrons are removed/gained, not other electrons).
● Lesson 1.6: Added activities to evaluate peer-reviewed studies

Modifications:
● Modified sports drink lab to be more focused so students leave with clear takeaways
● Changed electrolysis of copper chloride from warm-up to whole-class demo/lab with unpacking model to explore how electrolytes conduct electricity (Lesson 1.5)
● Modified assessment
